Case Study: Building A Cost-Effective Spray Booth For ADE Power

Summary
When a global manufacturer of precision-engineered modular enclosures, ADE Power, contacted us about creating a custom spray booth, we knew we had to come up with an innovative solution to their problem. This was no ordinary spray booth – it needed to be longer than an Olympic-sized swimming pool and as tall as the average two-bed UK home.
Challenge
ADE Power provides comprehensive solutions for housing critical power equipment such as acoustic generator enclosures, switchgear, energy storage, fuel tanks and related equipment. Part of the process involves spraying and coating the enclosures to protect against rust, corrosion and the elements.
They came to us with an unusual problem – they needed a spray booth large enough to accommodate full-size shipping containers as part of their manufacturing process. Up to this point, they had struggled to find anything suitable as traditional spray booths were either too small or would cost millions of pounds to build.
While ADE Power had already arranged an extraction system, the supplier required the painting area to be enclosed and reduced in size to ensure the extraction fans performed effectively.
The Solution
Instead of a permanent structure, we set about building a 60m long by 7m high spray booth using durable PVC curtains with integrated clear vision panels to let natural light in.
Additionally, we installed a sliding track from a steel structure suspended in the ceiling, and we used two 90-degree track bends to create a “U-shape” spray booth. We also installed a suspended roof panel using flexible PVC to fully enclose the area, complete with custom cut-outs for lighting installation.
The result was a fully enclosed, high-performance spray booth that could be easily opened or collapsed to allow access for goods, offering both flexibility and functionality at a fraction of the cost of a permanent structure.
We worked with ADE Power to:
- Build a large-scale spray booth capable of housing full-size shipping containers
- Create a flexible space which could be fully constructed or retracted depending on requirements
- Design a painting area of the required size which would also allow the extraction fans to work efficiently
- Integrate clear panels to allow natural light to enter the production area and aid staff
The Outcome
We succeeded in creating a large-scale spray booth which met ADE Power’s requirements without breaking the bank. The outcome was a flexible paint spray booth that was perfect for ADE Power’s needs. A spokesman said:
“Hutchinson did a fantastic job installing a spray booth for us. Luke came to site within a couple of days of me calling and his team was back on site within a few weeks. Really impressed with the product, it’s been a fantastic addition to our production facility, I have no issues recommending them to anyone else.”
Why It Worked
The project was a success because we were able to give ADE Power exactly what they needed within their budget. The design of the spray booth also gives them the flexibility they require for their production processes, which they wouldn’t be able to achieve with a fixed structure.
