Flexible Workshop Access for a Leading Fabrication Company

Written by Heidi Croson | Oct 7, 2026, 12:12:10 PM

Blackrow Group is an engineering and fabrication company based in Grimsby, England. From its headquarters, the team supports projects across fabrication, machining, mechanical and electrical engineering, site installation, and maintenance.

Blackrow Group asked us to help create a separate, dedicated area within their new warehouse at their Grimsby head office. We needed to create a space to separate their stainless steel and carbon areas.

We designed and installed a bespoke Slida-curtain, our sliding industrial curtain system, with three separate opening points. This gives Blackrow the flexibility to open the curtain at different positions depending on where vehicles, personnel or machinery need to pass through.

The result is a clearly defined workspace that still provides quick, flexible access when needed, without the cost or disruption of installing a permanent wall.

The Challenge

As part of Blackrow Group's expansion, the team needed to make better use of an empty warehouse space at their Grimsby headquarters.

The warehouse was originally an open shell with no internal separation, so Blackrow needed a way to create a dedicated area within the larger space.

A permanent wall was not suitable because the area still needed to accommodate the regular movement of vehicles, personnel and machinery. The solution needed to provide effective separation while keeping the space flexible and easy to access.

Blackrow needed an industrial curtain that could create a clearly defined work area without interfering with day-to-day warehouse operations.

The Goal

The aim was to create a dedicated space with a flexible industrial warehouse curtain, while still allowing vehicles, people, and machinery to move through the area at several points.

Rather than relying on one fixed entrance, Blackrow wanted the flexibility to access the space from three separate positions along the curtain.

The solution needed to create clear separation, maintain easy access, and avoid the disruption of installing a permanent wall.

The Solution: A Bespoke Slida-curtain With Three Access Points

Hutchinson's PVC Solutions designed and installed a bespoke 20m x 8m Slida-curtain to suit the layout and access requirements of Blackrow's warehouse.

The curtain was manufactured from blue, 900gsm PVC and fitted to a sliding track system, allowing sections to be pulled back whenever access is required.

The main feature of this installation was three separate opening points along the curtain run.

Instead of routing every vehicle, employee, or piece of machinery through one entrance, Blackrow's team can open the sliding curtain at the most convenient position for the task at hand.

Once access is no longer required, the curtain can simply be closed again to recreate the separated workspace.

This gives Blackrow the flexibility of a workshop curtain while still creating a clearly defined area within the warehouse.

The Outcome

Blackrow now has a dedicated space within its Grimsby warehouse while retaining the flexibility to move vehicles, people and machinery through the area from separate access points.

The finished industrial curtain provides the separation the business needed without permanently changing the warehouse layout or restricting movement around the site.

The factory curtain also helps contain dust within the dedicated area, reducing the amount that spreads into the surrounding warehouse and helping Blackrow maintain a cleaner, more controlled workspace.”

Meeting The Blackrow Team

During our visit to Blackrow Group, we met with Lewis Crowther, their Business Development Manager and Head of Marketing, to learn more about the company, the new warehouse space and how the Slida-curtain will be used day-to-day.

We were also given a tour of Blackrow’s 180,000 sq ft headquarters, which gave us a much better understanding of the scale of their operation and how the new space fits into the wider site.

The visit let us see the installation in action and hear directly from Lewis about what Blackrow needed from the space and why flexibility was so important to the project.

Why Flexibility Was Important

One of the main reasons Blackrow chose a workshop curtain from Hutchinsons for the new warehouse was the flexibility our solution provides.

Lewis explained that the curtain lets the team open different sections of the space depending on what they are working on. Once one area has been cleaned down, they can adjust the curtain to create more room where needed, then change the layout again as their requirements shift.

The multiple access points also make it easier for people, vehicles and machinery to move through the space without relying on one fixed entrance. At the same time, the industrial curtain helps keep the working area separated and supports better dust control across the warehouse.

Working With Hutchinson’s

Lewis also spoke positively about his experience working with our team, describing them as accommodating, clean, friendly and polite. He added that we had been “a very good partner to work with” throughout the project.

He also said Blackrow would be very likely to work with Hutchinson’s again on future projects and would be happy to recommend us to other businesses.

One thing Lewis particularly valued was that we design and manufacture our products in-house. For him, this builds confidence in the process, reduces reliance on external contractors, and helps projects move forward more quickly.

Another benefit for Blackrow was the 10-year guarantee offered with our installed workshop curtains Lewis explained that this reassurance gives the team confidence that, if anything goes wrong in the future, they have support in place.

What Blackrow Group Said
